What to have ready before you send
The more of this you can put in the request, the fewer rounds of questions before a real number comes back.
- The area, in square feet. The published cost model defaults to 500 square feet, and installed turf is published at 8 to 15 per square foot, so the area and the specification are what place your job on that scale. A rough measure of the widest and longest points, with a little added at each edge, is enough to start.
- What is on the ground now. Lawn, dirt, gravel, concrete or an old turf surface — and whether the existing lawn, the sprinkler lines and the debris have to be removed and hauled away.
- What the turf is for. A lawn, a pet yard, a play surface for children, or a putting green. The pet build is published at a 4-inch minimum base with a permeable backing and a zeolite or antimicrobial infill, and it carries a 1 to 3 per square foot premium over standard turf.
- Whether dogs use the yard daily. The published excavation standard for light foot traffic with no dogs is 2 to 3 inches, and for a specialised pet installation it is a 4-inch minimum, so this single answer decides how much stone is ordered.
- How water behaves now. Where the yard drains, whether it pools after rain, and where the water goes — the published slope standard is 1 to 2 percent running away from structures.
- The soil and the slope. Clay that swells and heaves through the winter, and any compacted fill or hardpan under the surface, all change the excavation and the compaction.
- Access. Gate widths, stairs and what a machine or a stone delivery has to cross to reach the yard.
- Shade and sun. Published guidance on heat is that surface temperature climbs past 140 degrees in direct summer sun, and lighter infill colours and lighter turf shades run noticeably cooler, so ask about stay-cool fibre where the yard is fully exposed.
- Your town, or the nearest crossroads if you are outside a town limit.
The two details that most change the price
The first is the base depth, and the second is the stone in it. A standard residential base is published at 2 to 3 inches of excavation; a pet yard is a 4-inch minimum and up to 6 inches in heavy clay. The published quantities are 1 ton of stone per 100 square feet at a 3-inch depth and 1.33 tons per 100 square feet at 4 inches, with an extra 10 percent ordered because compaction settles the stone 8 to 10 percent — so on a 500 square foot yard the 4-inch base is 6.67 tons and the order is 7.33 tons. The stone itself is published at 48 per ton for #57 clean washed angular stone against 40 for Class II road base, and only the washed open-graded stone leaves the roughly 40 percent void space that drains.
Everything else is smaller than those two lines. Turf and infill is published at 4.00 per square foot combined for a basic build with silica sand, against 6.00 for rapid-drain turf with zeolite, and labour at 5.50 against 6.50 for the pet build. Say which end of that you want and the quote comes back closer to right the first time.
